Test preparation important, but so is development of other skills

Dear Gilpin parents,

Last Tuesday we started TCAP testing. You should have received a robocall from me asking you to make sure children get plenty of sleep, eat breakfast and have a positive attitude about these tests. It is important to continue these actions because we will do more testing in March. Children need to do their best on these tests because they are a measure of how well they are learning. Of course, there are other ways we know they are learning, but the testing has become the one that most people use.

It is also important for us to remember that there are other skills that may be even more important for our children: a positive attitude toward challenges, attention to detail, extended focus on working and working with other children are each important and essential parts of our Montessori curriculum. Children will use these skills to be successful and we must value them as much as we do test scores.

Attendance has improved over last year, but a lot of children did not come to school when it snowed. Please remember that children need every day possible to learn everything they can at school. It is essential for their sake to get them to school.

Our recent parent education night focused on Montessori math materials, and Mr. Morken and Mr. Nienhueser presented part of the sequence of math, after which parents used the materials to see how their students would learn using them. The more details parents learn about Montessori education, the happier they are that their children attend here. Thank you for your support.

Family Science Night :: Monday, March 11!

We hope you can join us Monday, March 11 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. for our next Family Night! The event will feature animals from the Denver Zoo, Dr. Mike’s Bag of Bugs and a chemistry activity! Dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 5:30 – 6 p.m. Don’t forget to RSVP! We hope to see you there!

Join us for Coffee With Principal Vincent!

Principal Vincent would like to get to know you better! Please join us Monday, April 8 from 7:30 – 8 a.m. for our next Coffee With Principal Vincent!

We will meet in the Gilpin library, which is on the second floor of the school building. We hope to see you there!

Coffees With Principal Vincent will take place one morning a month throughout the school year. They are an opportunity to have an informal conversation with Mr. Vincent.

During each month’s coffee, we will be choosing a different topic to discuss. We welcome your suggestions!

New standards align well with Montessori

Gilpin Families,

Colorado is changing its standards for education to the Common Core, which is a set of guidelines that will, among other things, require students to write more detailed analyses of an author’s work, spend time working out answers and reading for details. Fortunately, the Common Core standards are more aligned with our Montessori practices than previous standards.

One way we are implementing the new standards in our elementary classes is via a focus on research. We are requiring additional detail in students’ report, and focusing less on the “creative” aspect of the work. This focus on detail will help students practice discovering exactly what is expected of them, and on a test this is a critical skill in order to show what you really know. Speaking of testing, it is very important that parents do their part to help our children do the best they can on upcoming TCAP assessments. Breakfast and sleep are essential for every student so that their brains are prepared for the demands of testing.

While the first round of choice has ended, please share with friends and family that you can still take a tour and fill out the paperwork to get on our waitlist. Approximately one out of three students at Gilpin has choiced-in, and this shows how our community values our Montessori program. Please don’t hesitate to come to us with any questions. Gilpin Community Open House :: Tuesday, Jan. 15

Gilpin’s annual Community Open House is Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. We invite all current and prospective Gilpin families and interested community members to come and visit the school, see our Montessori classrooms and meet some of our teachers and staff, including Principal Frank Vincent. Gilpin students and their families will also be on hand to share their experiences and talk about opportunities to get involved at the school. Spread the word and we look forward to seeing you!
